Midsized In The Mideast

As members of the Arab Air Carriers Organization (AACO) meet this week in Sana’a, Yemen’s capital city, Airline Weekly talked with Captain Abdulkhalek al-Kadi, Chairman of host airline Yemenia Airways. We asked:

How does a relatively small airline such as Yemenia (a joint venture between the governments of Yemen and Saudi Arabia) compete against larger rivals in the region?

Being a small airline is not neces-sarily a disadvantage.

We try to be dynamic and adapt to market changes promptly and adequately.

Still, the unequal and unbal-anced opportunities, the much-debated subsidies for some [large] airlines and the power mega-carriers have with suppliers and vendors gives them an edge in obtaining lower unit costs.

Are you satisfied with your air-line's cost structure?

What are some steps you are taking to control ex-penses as fuel costs rise?

We have a clear picture of our cost structure and a long term plan to tackle it but it takes longer for many of the measures [to take effect] due to legal and social constraints.

In our case, we are overstaffed and are in the middle of a process with the government for a rehabilitation pro-gram while still having to hire more young, educated and energetic graduates who have more specific airline training.

We at Yemenia are conscious about our national commit-ments towards the young generation of Yemenis who will have the re-sponsibility of successfully running the airline in the future.

What are the economic pros-pects for Yemen, and can tourism play a significant role in the coun-try's development?

Yemen has a great future, no doubt. It is an emerging country with lots of opportunity.

Yemen has prom-ising natural re-sources and the current wave of preparations for the LNG (liquefied natural gas) project and power plants will ensure that the foreign commu-nity working in Yemen will dou-ble.

Tourism is a major industry that is growing dramatically.

We partici-pate in trade fairs and have a long queue of familiarization and press trips… we promote Yemen and illustrate the true, friendly and hospi-table Yemen to project the cultural and historical treasures of the coun-try with its unique variety of land-scape, beaches and islands.

And do not forget the year-round crisp weather that is second to none

Yemenia has taken the strategic decision to outsource all its passenger sales and services IT requirements to Mercator, the IT division of the Emirates Group.

A second phase will eventually see more products introduced into all parts of the airline, especially in the financial and cargo areas.

Mercator’s Airline Reservation System (MARS) will give Yemenia everything it needs to efficiently grow revenue and keep a tight control over distribution costs. Packed with all the features needed for airlines to operate an efficient reservations operation, the system will enhance customer service, sharpen competitive edge and keep a cap on costs.

Yemenia has also opted for MACS, the Mercator Airport Control System, which delivers fast and efficient check in, streamlining procedures and boosting productivity. MACS also takes care of the entire baggage management process prior to take-off.

The CRIS frequent flyer solution completes the trio of products covered under the first phase of the agreement. CRIS will offer a wide range of attractive new features to the members of Yemenia’s ‘Arabia Felix Club’ frequent flyer scheme. The airline’s most loyal customers will receive a much more rewarding experience and will enjoy superlative service.

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman Emirates Group, said: “This landmark agreement serves to strengthen our already close partnership with Yemenia, and we’re looking forward to working hand-in-hand with the airline to achieve its ambition of becoming a force to be reckoned with in the region.”

Captain Abdulkhalek Al-Kadi, Yemenia’s Chairman, said: “We’re currently undergoing a dramatic rate of expansion here at Yemenia. Our accelerated fleet expansion, increasing passenger numbers and recent entry into the Arabesk airline alliance have all combined to send a strong message that Yemenia is going places.

“It’s vital that we have the IT solutions in place that will support our rapid pace of growth and the backing of an IT supplier that we can trust to deliver. Mercator, with its unrivalled airline and IT experience, has proved itself to be such a partner.”

Yemenia has been flying for more than 50 years, and its routes now span the Middle East, Far East, Africa and Europe. Today it serves 30 cities with the latest Boeing and Airbus aircraft.

Mercator’s customer base includes major world carriers such as Emirates, SriLankan, British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Air New Zealand, and Varig.
